Disrupting industries… It’s in our DNA

An interesting spot to begin the story of Gallagher Corporation is with golf ball development.

Golf balls have advanced a long way since being made from beech wood (14th century), leather (17th century), or tree sap (19th century). Today’s golf balls are constructed with a high-tech core and skin that work together to deliver performance that would have been unimaginable back in golf’s early days. Premium-performance golf balls use an extremely durable polyurethane skin that provides higher spin rates, better control, and a softer feel compared to other cover materials.

Low handicap golfers everywhere can thank Richard (Dick) Gallagher, the sole inventor on the 1962 patent for the polyurethane golf ball cover.

It was the untapped potential of polyurethane to create game-changing products like the polyurethane covered golf ball, that led Dick to make a courageous decision in 1964. He left his stable chemist position at DuPont, where he had been working on the development and commercialization of the earliest cast polyurethane elastomers. And he founded Gallagher Corporation.

His mission: Mold polyurethane into game-changing products for OEMs across all industries.

We’ve been following through on that mission ever since. (Now with two more generations involved at Gallagher Corporation.)

Our game plan remains the same: Leverage the advantages of polyurethane to provide longer lasting and higher performing products that change industries.

For example, look at what we did with our partner John Deere to improve a key cotton harvesting component: the doffer…

The doffer is one of two critical parts that work together to pick cotton. First, barbed spindles rotate at high speed to remove the seed-cotton from the plant. Then, counter-rotating doffers pull the seed-cotton off of the spindles. The components are subjected to harsh field conditions, which were causing the rubber doffers to quickly wear out. In addition, tiny pieces of black rubber that had worn off the doffers would contaminate the harvested white cotton.

Enter polyurethane. We worked with John Deere to understand the doffer application, and then went to work on a custom polyurethane formulation that would match their requirements. There were prototypes, field tests, and more prototypes. And by the end, we were able to significantly improve doffer wear life and eliminate the colored contamination. Over the past 30 years, our polyurethane doffer has been the industry standard for cotton harvesting.

But it’s not about us. We’re happy to have made a small contribution to John Deere’s market leadership.
