Wet food approval is obtained when chemical compositional requirements are met under directive #177.2600 of the FDA register. Dry food approval is obtained when chemical compositional requirements are met under directive #177.1680 of the FDA register.
A dry food is one containing no free fat or oils on the surface. Urethane compounds approved for wet food contact are also approved for dry food contact. In applications where the urethane elastomer is in contact with dry food, it’s important to study the rate of abrasion. Certain food items can be quite abrasive; testing should be conducted in accordance with ASTM Method D968-81.
A wide range of material properties can be obtained using the FDA approved materials. Prepolymers in the form of TDI Ethers, TDI Esters, MDI Ethers, and MDI Esters can all be processed for both wet and dry food approval. Many curatives, catalysts, and plasticizers are also approved. For the polyesters, material hardness in the range of 55A to 60D can be achieved. For the polyethers, material hardness in the range of 60A to 95A is obtainable.
